Today, I will introduce you to the origin of the Flower Narcissus in Chinese culture. Once upon a time, in a small village in southern China, there lived an old lady and her son Dalong. They only had a small piece of land, so the harvest was not much, and coupled with various disasters, they lived a very hard life. One day, Dalong found that the food at home was almost gone, so he decided to go out to find food. The old lady sighed, sent Dalong away, and said to herself: "Alas, I wonder if Dalong will be lucky today? I hope he can find something to eat." The old lady was hungry and was reluctant to eat the little food left at home because she was worried that if Dalong returned empty-handed, there would be nothing left to eat. It was getting dark, and the old lady suddenly remembered: "Oh! Dalong will be very hungry when he comes home, I have to prepare some food for him first." Although the rice container at home was almost empty, the old lady still tried hard to dig out a little rice from the corners, just enough to cook a bowl of rice. The old lady happily cooked the rice and waited for Dalong to come home for dinner. Not long after, she heard footsteps. The old lady opened the door excitedly, only to see an old beggar in tattered clothes. "Madam, I'm hungry! Please give me something to eat!" "But…but…" The old lady was in a dilemma, because if she gave her only bowl of rice to the old beggar, then Dalong would be hungry when he returned home if he didn't find anything to eat. The old beggar pleaded again, "Madam, please, I haven't eaten for several days!" The old lady couldn't bear it, so she invited the old beggar into the house and gave him the bowl of rice. The old lady: "Come, you can eat now!" The old beggar grabbed the bowl of fragrant white rice and gobbled it up, finishing the whole bowl in no time! Old beggar: "Thank you! That was so tasty." Unexpectedly, the old lady suddenly started crying, and the old beggar asked nervously: "Madam, what's wrong?" Old lady: "To be honest, this is the last bowl of rice our family had. I intended to leave it for my son…" Old beggar: "Oh! I'm so sorry! I'm so sorry! But I've already eaten the rice, how can I give it back to you?" Seeing the old lady still crying, the old beggar stood up, embarrassed, apologized, and walked outside. He walked to the pond on the land in front of the old lady's house, and vomited. When the old lady saw this, she hurried out to comfort the old beggar. But when she walked out of the door, the old beggar suddenly disappeared. Not long after, when Dalong returned home, the old lady told Dalong what happened. Dalong comforted his mother and said, "Mom, it's okay. Look, I found some wild vegetables and fruits, and dug up some sweet potatoes. It's enough for us to eat for two or three days. As for the old man, I will go out tomorrow to help you find him and see how he is doing." That night, the old lady was worried about the old beggar and couldn't sleep all night. The next morning, Dalong shouted in surprise as he stepped out of the house: "Mom! Come out and see! There are so many flowers growing by the pond in our field!" The old lady ran out and saw the beautiful white flowers. She remembered: "This is where the old man vomited the rice yesterday. How did it turn into flowers? Is he a god?" The old lady and Dalong were very happy to see this miracle. They decided to give the flower a name. The old lady said: "The gods in the sky are called ‘Tiānxiān’ and this flower grows by the water, so let's call it ‘Shuǐxiān’". By the way, ‘Tiānxiān’ means ‘celestial gods’ in Chinese, and ‘Shuǐxiān’ means water gods. So Dalong tidied up his fields, and soon the land was full of beautiful Narcissus Flowers, and he often took some to the market to sell. In this way, Dalong and his mother's lives gradually improved. Kids, the legends about the flower Narcissus are so different in the West and the East. Isn’t it interesting? The most notable thing about the old lady and Dalong is that they can empathize with others and are willing to help, even though they are poor and have a hard life. I believe that once their lives become healthier, they will help more people. “We need to put ourselves in the shoes of others.” 請跟Bear老師再說一次: “We need to put ourselves in the shoes of others.” Kids, I hope you like this story.
