正体不明の巨大生物「プロトタキシーテス」は本当の意味で未知の生物かもしれない!?（彩恵りり）。約4億年前の地球の陸地には、背の高い樹木と呼べるような植物はまだ出現していなかったと考えられているよ。そんな時代において、例外的に背が高かったと言われている生物が「プロトタキシーテス (Prototaxites)」で、なんと高さが8mに達していたと言われているんだよね！ 1859年に命名されて以来、プロトタキシーテスの正体は大きな謎とされてきたけど、最近では真菌 (菌類) の仲間、いわば巨大なキノコなのではないか、と考えられてきたんだよね。 しかしエディンバラ大学のCorentin C. Loron氏などの研究チームは、この主張に異を唱える研究結果を発表したよ。プロトタキシーテスは真菌を含め、現在知られているどの生物界に当てはめようとしてもうまく行かないことから、プロトタキシーテスは真菌どころか、現在知られているどの生物の系統にも当てはまらないことが示されたよ！ つまりプロトタキシーテスは、「界」レベルで絶滅してしまった未知の真核生物の系統であり、そんな正体不明な生き物が4億年前の地球にいたことを示す貴重な化石が現代まで残ったことになるよ！
