《鼓书艺人》讲述了抗战时期，大鼓书艺人方宝庆一家的艰辛历程。他们面临日军轰炸，亲人离世，女儿秀莲的遭遇尤为悲惨，不仅婚事告吹，还遭受了不幸的对待，而另一个女儿大凤也遭到了抛弃。但方宝庆坚韧、顽强和乐观向上的精神，为我们展现了人性的美好与善良，在战争的残酷环境中更显珍贵。 《鼓书艺人》是老舍先生于1948年至1949年间在美国创作的一部长篇小说。这部小说于1952年由郭镜秋（Helena Kuo）女士译为英文并在美国出版，但由于中文原稿遗失，直到1980年才由马小弥从英文译本《The Drum Singers》译回中文，与中国读者分享其魅力。
