The Gurus & Griots program is a selective, cohort-based fellowship that puts African and Afro-descendant leaders front and center as educators and representatives of IE University. The yearlong program addresses global challenges and helps develop and showcase the unique perspectives of the fellows, incorporating their work into the IE University ecosystem. <br /><br />In this podcast series, Eniola Harrison, the Director of the Africa Center at IE University embarks on conversations with some of the Gurus and Griots fellows and talks about their areas of specialization. Antumi is a professor at several universities, including New York University. His studies center on African communities in Spain and promoting awareness of African culture and history. In this episode, Antumi walks us through the history and impact of African people in Spain. He tells us that in 3000 BC the entire population of Spain was black and remained largely so until many of them were expelled during the dethronement of Carlos III in the 17th century. Antumi talks about Spain’s conscious effort to become more European and erase its African history, to the point where today, only four public universities in Spain offer African history courses. She describes herself as an access advocate, increasing access to commodities such as education, healthcare, financing, and information.
