Ein idyllischer Urlaub sollte es werden. Eine Woche auf einer abgeschiedenen Insel vor der Küste von Maine hatten die drei Freunde gebucht. Angeln, Fotografieren und Inspiration für einen neuen Roman finden, das waren die Ziele. Nachdem das Boot die drei auf der Insel abgesetzt hatte und sie ihr Feriendomizil bezogen hatten, ging es auf eine Erkundungstour. Sie stießen hierbei nicht nur auf eine ungewöhnliche Ansammlung von Knochen, sondern verirrten sich auf den Schrecken hin und fanden erst mit einigen Blessuren und nach Einbruch der Dunkelheit zurück zur Hütte. Ein deftiges Abendmahl und ein paar Biere später fielen die Freunde dann in ihre Betten. Doch die Nachtruhe währte nicht allzu lang.

1974. Vor der Küste von Maine pflügt ein Fischerboot durch den Atlantik, genauer gesagt den Golf von Maine. Neben der dreiköpfigen Besatzung der Abigale, befinden sich heute auch drei junge Männer mit an Bord. Die drei kennen sich schon ewig und haben eine Tradition seit mehr als 10 Jahren aufrechterhalten: Einmal im Jahr wird gemeinsam Urlaub gemacht. Die einzige Regel: Es muss abseits von eingetretenen Pfaden sein, also kein 5-Sterne-Hotel, kein Souvenirladen mit Krimskrams in der Nähe und ganz besonders keine Touristenmassen mit ihren schreienden Blagen. In diesem Jahr ist die Wahl auf eine Hütte auf einer idyllischen, kleinen Insel, rund eine Meile vor der Küste gefallen. Die Annonce hat ein sommerliches Anglerparadies für Menschen, die vorwiegend Ruhe suchen, versprochen, also genau das, was die drei suchten.
