Uruguaylaista rugbyjoukkuetta kuljettanut lentokone putosi lentäjän arviointivirheen seurauksena keskelle Andien vuoristoa perjantaina 13. lokakuuta 1972. Onnettomuudesta selvinneet joutuivat välittömästi aloittamaan uudenlaisen kamppailun hengestään, sillä he olivat nyt keskellä lumista erämaata vailla minkäänlaisia kylmään säähän sopivia varusteita, kunnollista suojaa, ja ennen kaikkea ilman riittävää määrää juomaa ja ruokaa. Koska selviytyjiä ei onnistuttu löytämään, he päätyivät pelastamaan itse itsensä 72:n Andeilla vietetyn päivän jälkeen. 1900-luvun taitteessa löydetystä radiumista tuli nopeasti aikansa ihmeaine: sitä markkinoitiin lääkkeenä jokaiseen mahdolliseen vaivaan, ja monet uskoivat radioaktiivisuuden parantavaan voimaan ja terveysvaikutuksiin.
