This included his career and mental health. He's now turned it around and is creating content to help others who are in the same position he was. The competitive mindset that drives athletic performance can easily transfer into gambling behaviors—chasing losses, believing in “winning streaks,” and viewing risk-taking as part of the game. Many athletes also face high levels of stress, irregular schedules, and periods of boredom or isolation, especially during injury or off-season, making gambling an appealing escape or thrill. In some locker rooms, gambling is normalized as a bonding activity, blurring the lines between fun and addiction. And with increased exposure to betting sponsorships and the ease of mobile gambling, the risk is higher than ever.

🙏🏻 Recovery Resources: https://odaatgamblingawareness.com/resources

✅ Sign Up For Our Newsletter For A Free Guide On The 4 Steps To Quit Gambling: https://shorturl.at/ogFVu

😅 Subscribe To Avoid Making The Same Mistakes I Did: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCH8s1lNHQbXzltQg_aXMAQA?sub_confirmation=1

Common Facts About Gambling Addiction: - Approximately 2-3% of Americans meet the criteria for a gambling disorder, which equates to around 6 million people. - Around 96% of gamblers lose money in the long run, reinforcing the industry's design to ensure the house always wins. - Studies show that people with a gambling addiction impact 7-10 others around them on average, showing that a gambling addiction can impact more people than simply the gambler themself. - Over 50% of people with gambling addiction also struggle with substance abuse or another mental health disorder, such as depression or anxiety. - Gambling Addiction costs the U.S. economy an estimated $7 billion annually, including losses from job productivity, criminal justice expenses, and healthcare costs.

Megan and I dive into the surprising links between ADHD and gambling addiction! 🤝 How I Quit Gambling: https://youtu.be/ZUx9qIm4sNY

🙌 Get Evive and redefine your relationship to gambling for a year for FREE: https://www.getevive.com/ only available in select countries

👀 Looking for a gambling treatment center? Check out https://rightchoicerecoverynj.com for information about a family owned and operated gambling treatment program.

There is a well-documented correlation between ADHD and gambling addiction, with individuals diagnosed with ADHD being significantly more likely to develop problem gambling behaviors. The impulsivity, difficulty with delayed gratification, and need for stimulation that characterize ADHD can make the fast-paced, high-reward nature of gambling especially appealing. Studies have shown that people with ADHD may be more prone to chasing losses, taking bigger risks, and struggling to stop even when gambling becomes harmful. Additionally, many with undiagnosed or untreated ADHD turn to gambling as a form of escape or self-medication—seeking relief from boredom, restlessness, or emotional distress. This makes early intervention and proper ADHD treatment a critical piece in preventing or addressing gambling addiction.

About Megan: Megan Poliquin, LPCC-S, LICDC-GAMB, is the Manager of Gambling Treatment and Prevention Programs at the Zepf Center in Toledo, Ohio. For the past 7 years, she has been dedicated to providing therapy to individuals with gambling disorders, many of whom are also navigating recovery from other substance use or mental health challenges. In addition to providing therapy, she actively participates in outreach and prevention efforts to raise awareness about problem gambling in her community. Recently, she has been busy connecting with college students through problem gambling outreach and brief screenings, engaging with them both on campus and at sporting events.
