Bradley asserts Martin Luther's theology of the cross as a helpful backdrop by which to view all human suffering, and specifically the suffering caused by mental illness. Kelsi asks Brad his opinions on a recent comments over mental illness from a well-known pastor and the two discuss both harmful and helpful ways the church can offer comfort to those who find themselves suffering bouts of depressions, despair, and disappointment. Bradley Gray is pastor of Stonington Baptist Church in Paxinos, PA, where he lives with his wife, Natalie, and their three children. His writing and research are especially focused on pastoral theology and the theological development of the Reformation. <em>Finding God in the Darkness</em> was named as a 2023 finalist in the New Author category of the ECPA Christian Book Awards.</p> <p><br></p> <p>Show Notes:</p> <p><a href="http://www.1517.org/donate-podcasts">Support 1517</a></p> <p><a href="http://www.1517.org/podcasts">1517 Podcasts</a></p> <p><a href="https://podcasts.apple.com/us/channel/1517-podcast-network/id6442751370">The 1517 Podcast Network on Apple Podcasts</a></p> <p><a href="https://www.youtube.com/channel/UChDdMiZJv8oYMJQQx2vHSzg">1517 on Youtube</a></p> <p><br></p> <p><strong>More from Kelsi: </strong></p> <p><a href="https://www.1517.org/contributors">Kelsi Klembara</a> <a href="https://www.instagram.com/kelsiklembara/"></a></p> <p><a href="https://www.instagram.com/kelsiklembara/">Follow Kelsi on Instagram</a> </p> <p><a href="https://twitter.com/kelsiklembara">Follow Kelsi on Twitter</a> </p> <p><a href="https://kelsiklembara.substack.com/?utm_source=discover_search">Kelsi's Newsletter</a> </p> <p><br></p> <p><strong>Subscribe to the Show:</strong> </p> <p><a href="https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/outside-ourselves/id1646836780">Apple Podcasts</a> </p> <p><a href="https://open.spotify.com/show/2XX0DCwK8vX1E7hl4jWInj?si=d0ce81931a1a487f">Spotify</a> </p> <p><a href="https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCKgmg46uBZJyDR-hcWf06pQ">Youtube</a></p> <p><br></p> <p><strong>More from Brad and this episode:</strong></p> <p><a href="https://www.amazon.com/Finding-God-Darkness-Reflections-Disappointment-ebook/dp/B0CD8PJJN9/ref=sr_1_1?crid=1HOQ8NUN3ZWBN&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.mNWOZHn5-nTFAHjE1LbF7ahIbNzHts601hl_1PW0LyrykioaMZKGsq4xAxacU1XculLPtzkf7yc70O8iusbQtVtd4kS-Tk47xZwUDtVPW0853TAjBLfy_3haejfqbFh8v8rKDRCxJGtTYdSlDWZi1jFUAdhx_qfz8b586O9ONAVkCxvoXeP2QbspEd7-Aot87lwjlnXzQllFz3drugs9h6ldUl66H49O-GeAkIPLJ_U.aA18MKkxV4DvPMSZIrPDv-y-E7G6o83YPtRwzHYwt1Q&dib_tag=se&keywords=finding+god+in+the+darkness&qid=1719258100&sprefix=finding+god+in+the+darkness%2Caps%2C117&sr=8-1" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferer">Order <em>Finding God in the Darkness</em></a></p> <p><a href="https://www.instagram.com/pastorbradleygray/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferer">Follow Brad on Instagram</a></p> <p><a href="https://www.graceupongrace.net/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferer">Follow Brad on Substack</a></p> <p><a href="https://x.com/_DeanAnthony/status/1785479385790947498?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1785495709023641641%7Ctwgr%5E6e056c7b144ed0cb6ce849f65b052471150bca31%7Ctwcon%5Es2_&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fjulieroys.com%2Fjohn-macarthur-denies-mental-illness-no-such-thing-ptsd-ocd-adhd%2F" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferer">John MacArthur on mental illness</a></p> <p><a href="https://www.amazon.com/Theology-Cross-Heidelberg-Disputation-Reflections/dp/194896905X/ref=sr_1_4?crid=6IQ18XSD33ZQ&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.3MfYwxQlpVFmVg8-H9pWYMUUy2Z8tS6Tg6KQVV5P9rp1l_VvtfBZ0VB9oa2yuPMS2tYY968EXhX7H8Mpx05M9EoIaesSfnk0IbsyArKrdZGriCAyf3Kx76zXvWgCWHXOQNaq1WDNgLfd8Rbkztx3YiLM_siQ3eVfJF_q-heMTv6J2fu8iVLpaB691lYUp5aD-iHnCvyZALd2heBseCmkSO066CcIyhFNa2MrH0nniHg.4ZCEQWfvpog49zLBEWdwjkpD4Lc3_0bCLm50mW6KZgw&dib_tag=se&keywords=the+theology+of+the+cross&qid=1719258395&sprefix=the+theology+of+the+cros%2Caps%2C101&sr=8-4" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferer"><em>Theology of the Cross: Luther's Heidelberg Disputation & Reflections on Its 28 Theses</em></a></p> <p><a href="https://www.amazon.com/Being-Theologian-Cross-Reflections-Disputation/dp/080284345X/ref=sr_1_1?crid=1YCYVIWTMCBM0&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.FJK8rU4IPBYgaHB75ZAe_Cr0280s30J_YMIVTyAjn8pIdwLSSQ-Rt__K6HmGGBtmFXZHobQUuUGdkphTQWaHTw9osB0S4JwIK0Tacm0rz_3WPt5tpgnhsKvAVwpwiJ_h0-1RZnBUwDaiicdEmDJLlpiucjcbyfESSR420tOS4ibePrAcFVqLQ5i-UWZUSRMWDvUWrrq-DtIJJtfnhtpnjPPPZ1rzQ1TrQrf1qufwBHc.8fcvYIB9YUmt6-93Te13gvcXkdOsju7gIquiwVP8NWs&dib_tag=se&keywords=on+being+a+theologian+of+the+cross&qid=1719258417&sprefix=on+being+a+theologian+%2Caps%2C101&sr=8-1" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferer">Gerhard Forde's <em>On Being a Theologian of the Cross</em></a><em></em></p>

<p>In this episode, Kelsi interviews Dr. Robert Kolb about his newest book, <a href="https://www.amazon.com/Face-Luthers-Reality-Lutheran-Quarterly/dp/1506498329/ref=sr_1_1?crid=256R8QZNR7IMP&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.TzEqqLeSFE22IaHScV9ekKCWHU7ii2soSU_eQ7xrDbzGjHj071QN20LucGBJIEps.YpVsfJ39eGi7mfHiGj7lz3KGASp9IU4UxQWli0cHmXw&dib_tag=se&keywords=face+to+face%3A+luther%27s+view+of+reality&qid=1718118348&sprefix=face+to+face+luther%27s+view+o%2Caps%2C328&sr=8-1" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferer"><em>Face to Face: Luther's View of Reality</em></a>. In <em>Face to Face</em>, Dr. Kolb argues that Martin Luther's theology is underpinned by his understanding of relationships, both how Christians came "face to face" with God (<em>Coram Deo</em>) and "face to face" with the world (<em>Coram Mundo)</em>. It's these relationships that give us reality itself. Dr. Kolb is professor emeritus of Systematic Theology at Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, Missouri, and a world-renowned authority on Martin Luther and the history of the Reformation. </p> <p><br></p> <p><strong>Show Notes:</strong></p> <p><strong></strong><a href="http://www.1517.org/donate-podcasts">Support 1517</a></p> <p><a href="http://www.1517.org/podcasts">1517 Podcasts</a></p> <p><a href="https://podcasts.apple.com/us/channel/1517-podcast-network/id6442751370">The 1517 Podcast Network on Apple Podcasts</a></p> <p><a href="https://www.youtube.com/channel/UChDdMiZJv8oYMJQQx2vHSzg">1517 on Youtube</a></p> <p><br></p> <p><strong>More from Kelsi: </strong></p> <p><a href="https://www.1517.org/contributors">Kelsi Klembara</a> <a href="https://www.instagram.com/kelsiklembara/"></a></p> <p><a href="https://www.instagram.com/kelsiklembara/">Follow Kelsi on Instagram</a> </p> <p><a href="https://twitter.com/kelsiklembara">Follow Kelsi on Twitter</a> </p> <p><a href="https://kelsiklembara.substack.com/?utm_source=discover_search">Kelsi's Newsletter</a> </p> <p><br></p> <p><strong>Subscribe to the Show:</strong> </p> <p><a href="https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/outside-ourselves/id1646836780">Apple Podcasts</a> </p> <p><a href="https://open.spotify.com/show/2XX0DCwK8vX1E7hl4jWInj?si=d0ce81931a1a487f">Spotify</a> </p> <p><a href="https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCKgmg46uBZJyDR-hcWf06pQ">Youtube</a></p> <p><br></p> <p><strong>More from Dr. Kolb:</strong></p> <p>Order <a href="https://www.amazon.com/Face-Luthers-Reality-Lutheran-Quarterly/dp/1506498329/ref=sr_1_1?crid=256R8QZNR7IMP&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.TzEqqLeSFE22IaHScV9ekKCWHU7ii2soSU_eQ7xrDbzGjHj071QN20LucGBJIEps.YpVsfJ39eGi7mfHiGj7lz3KGASp9IU4UxQWli0cHmXw&dib_tag=se&keywords=face+to+face%3A+luther%27s+view+of+reality&qid=1718118348&sprefix=face+to+face+luther%27s+view+o%2Caps%2C328&sr=8-1" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferer"><em>Face to Face: Luther's View of Reality </em></a></p>

<p>Dr. Anthony Bradley serves as a distinguished research fellow at The Acton Institute and Research Professor of Interdisciplinary and Theological Studies at Kuyper College. He joins Kelsi to discuss his research, interest, and writing on the boy and man crisis and how he believes the Christus Victor articulation of the gospel – or Christ's victory over sin, death and the devil on the cross – has powerful implications for ridding men of shame and giving them a larger purpose to serve their neighbor.</p> <p><br></p> <p><strong>Show Notes:</strong></p> <p><a href="http://www.1517.org/donate-podcasts">Support 1517</a></p> <p><a href="http://www.1517.org/podcasts">1517 Podcasts</a></p> <p><a href="https://podcasts.apple.com/us/channel/1517-podcast-network/id6442751370">The 1517 Podcast Network on Apple Podcasts</a></p> <p><a href="https://www.youtube.com/channel/UChDdMiZJv8oYMJQQx2vHSzg">1517 on Youtube</a></p> <p><br></p> <p><strong>More from Kelsi: </strong><br><a href="https://www.1517.org/contributors">Kelsi Klembara</a> <a href="https://www.instagram.com/kelsiklembara/"> Follow Kelsi on Instagram</a> <br><a href="https://twitter.com/kelsiklembara">Follow Kelsi on Twitter</a> <br><a href="https://kelsiklembara.substack.com/?utm_source=discover_search">Kelsi's Newsletter</a> </p> <p><br></p> <p><strong>Subscribe to the Show:</strong> <br><a href="https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/outside-ourselves/id1646836780">Apple Podcasts</a> <br><a href="https://open.spotify.com/show/2XX0DCwK8vX1E7hl4jWInj?si=d0ce81931a1a487f">Spotify</a> <br><a href="https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCKgmg46uBZJyDR-hcWf06pQ">Youtube</a></p> <p><br></p> <p><strong>More from Dr. Bradley:</strong></p> <p><a href="https://www.dranthonybradley.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferer">Dr. Bradley's Website</a><a href="https://anthonybbradley.substack.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferer">Dr. Bradley's Substack</a><a href="https://twitter.com/drantbradley" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferer">Follow Dr. Bradley on X</a><a href="https://www.amazon.com/Heroic-Fraternities-College-Universities-America/dp/1666715530" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferer">Dr. Bradley's latest book, <em>Heroic Fraternities</em></a></p>
