<p>کنفرانس گوادلوپ به دعوت رئیس جمهور وقت فرانسه ولاری ژیسکاردستن با حضور سران سه کشور قدرتمند غربی، جیمی کارتر (آمریکا)، هلموت اشمیت (آلمان) و جیمز کالاهان (انگلیس) از ۴ تا ۷ ژانویه ۱۹۷۹ (یا ۱۴ تا ۱۷ دی ۱۳۵۷) در جزیره گوادلوپ که در دریای کارائیب قرار دارد و یکی از مستعمرات فرانسه است برگزار شد. بحران ایران و سرنوشت شاه یکی از موضوعات این کنفرانس در کنار موضوعات جهانی دیگری چون جنگ ویتنام و کامبوج، خشونت در آفریقای جنوبی، افزایش نفوذ اتحاد جماهیر شوروی در خلیج فارس، کودتا در افغانستان و خشونت سیاسی در ترکیه بود. به نظر می‌آید صادق قطب‌زاده، صادق طباطبایی و ابراهیم یزدی تحلیل‌هایی از اوضاع ایران و دیدگاه‌های آیت‌الله خمینی به سران کشورهای غربی داده بودند که احتمالا در این کنفرانس از آن‌ها برای تصمیم‌گیری درباره آینده ایران استفاده شده است. اما قبل از آنکه به این کنفرانس بپردازم لازم است در مورد برخورد دولت فرانسه و شاه با حضور آیت‌الله خمینی در خاک آن کشور صحبت کنیم. </p>
