The 2024 United States Presidential Election has been unlike any other. With one candidate claiming he should have won the last election, and the other candidate stepping in after the incumbent President withdrew from the race, it's been nothing if not unusual. One candidate is a convicted felon, while the other is hoping to be the first black woman President. The campaigning has been brutal. And the stakes are higher than they've ever been. Sam Dover and Deborah Groarke examine the personalities, the policies, the politics and the process

Electioneering is essentially the process by which candidates in an election seek to convince voters to support them - and not the other guy. In the US, the campaigns of the Democratic and Republican nominees for president have centred around particular age and class groups of people - as well as voters in crucial areas known as battleground states, which could offer them a potential edge in electoral college votes. Those battleground states have become even more important in light of the polls which suggest neither Donald Trump and Kamala Harris has a clear lead, and are essentially tied. But the race is being complicated by social media and even artificial technology, which has changed the shape of electioneering for the US presidency.
