Адвечная тэма выбару ў складаных умовах акупаванай тэрыторыі і партызанскай барацьбы. Гісторыя пра чалавечыя лёсы, пра жыццёвы выбар, пра выратаванне маленькага чалавека. Галоўны герой аповесці падчас ваенных дзеянняў вырываецца з акружэння і застаецца сам на сам з новароджаным дзіцёнкам-сіратой на руках Прайшоўшы пекла, ён аддае дзіця, спадзеючыся, што трапіць яно ў добрыя рукі. Сюжэт аповесці базуецца на ўспамінах былога партызана, які праз трыццаць гадоў пасля сканчэння вайны шукае таго, каму некалі выратаваў жыццё. Шукае, каб распавесці гісторыю ягонай сям’і, бацькоў, гісторыю першых дзён ягонага жыцця. Шукае, але ці знаходзіць? Аповесць была напісаная ў 1974 годзе. Упершыню апублікаваная ў часопісе «Новый мир» (№ 7 за 1974 год) на расейскай мове, толькі праз год кніга выйшла па-беларуску ў выдавецтве «Мастацкая літаратура». Чытае: Лявон Шматок
