One of the goals of the Wake the F*ck Up podcast is to bring to light the often taboo topics around death and grief. Today’s guest, Carla Fernandez, literally wrote the book on challenging these societal norms, with her new bestseller "Renegade Grief”. Carla Fernandez’s work focuses on how circles come together to foster collective care and change culture when a new status quo is called for. She is the cofounder of The Dinner Party, a national network of peer-support circles for young adult grievers, featured in The New York Times, NPR, Oprah Daily, and cited in multiple books. In addition to her work in grief, Carla partners with a range of clients through her community design studio as an impact strategist and facilitator, particularly on initiatives related to climate change, democracy, and the arts.

In this interview, Carla shares her personal journey of losing her father to cancer at a young age, which inspired her to create The Dinner Party as a nonprofit that connects grievers aged 21 to 45 through informal gatherings. Alix and Carla delve into themes explored in Carla's new book, which challenges societal norms surrounding grief and highlights the importance of processing emotions like anger while navigating loss.

Carla discusses the unique experiences and discussions that occur at Dinner Party gatherings, emphasizing that these meetings are not just about sadness but also fostering laughter and normalization of grief. Stick around the end of the interview as Carla shares her insights into The Dinner Party's guiding manifesto, which advocates for embracing the complexities of grief, what it means to thrive after loss, and invites listeners to engage with the community for support.

Resources:

Check out Carla’s new book - Renegade Grief - A Guide to the Wild Ride of Life after Loss

Learn more about the Dinner Party grief support network

Learn more about Carla on her website - https://www.carlafernandez.co/

Follow Carla on Instagram @carlitafernandez

Follow Wake on Instagram: @thewakewellness

Follow Alix Long on Instagram: @alixlongwinded

Download the WAKE app on the Apple App Store or Google Play Store.

In this powerful episode of the Wake the F*ck Up podcast, Alix sits down with Dr. Brody Miller, a brain injury survivor and Doctor of Natural Medicine who has built his career around helping others with holistic recovery from traumatic brain injury and promoting neurological well-being.

Dr. Miller explains how trauma often starts as physical but becomes emotional, mental, and spiritual. He realized his impulsivity and poor decision-making were symptoms of frontal lobe damage, not moral failures. Despite doctors saying recovery wasn't possible, he discovered neuroplasticity, and went from having three grand mal seizures monthly to being seizure-free. You don’t want to miss the conversation between Alix and Dr. Miller around the idea that trauma occurs when choice is taken away, and healing requires reassembling a sense of choice.

Later in the interview, Dr. Miller introduces trauma processing techniques such as 'memory reconsolidation' and shares practical recovery strategies, emphasizing natural dopamine boosters like movement and meditation. Together, Alix and Dr. Miller explore the emotional dimensions of trauma, and the importance of creating a new identity rather than seeking to return to the past.

Wrapping things up. Dr. Miller encourages listeners to journal to identify patterns in their recovery. Despite the trauma and challenges, this conversation is really centered around a message of hope, encapsulating the idea that sometimes adversity can lead to transformative opportunities.

Resources:

Follow Dr. Brody Miller on Instagram @drbrodymiller

Check out his book on Amazon - Brain Rescue: A 90 Day Blueprint to Reclaim Your Memory After a Brain Injury or Concussion

Explore more of Dr. Miller’s work via his website - https://drbrodymiller.com/

Follow Wake on Instagram: @thewakewellness

Follow Alix Long on Instagram: @alixlongwinded

Download the WAKE app on the Apple App Store or Google Play Store.

Welcome back to the Wake the F*ck Up podcast. Our producers are busy putting together some exciting new content for April, including several very special guests in the grief and mindfulness space. We hope you enjoy it! Thanks for listening.

>>>>>>>>>>>

In this powerful episode of the Wake the F*ck Up podcast, Alix sits down with Carolyn Moor, the founder of the Modern Widows Club, to discuss her personal journey through widowhood and how she transformed her pain into purpose. After losing her husband in a car accident, Carolyn made three promises to him: to prioritize their daughters, honor his name, and find love again. But her healing didn’t stop there.

Carolyn shares her inspiring shift from focusing solely on her children to embracing personal growth and healing. Through the Modern Widows Club, she leads an organization that offers hope, support, and empowerment to widows at all stages of their journey—focusing on health, growth, and leadership rather than just grief. Carolyn explains how the club advocates for widows to be included in important research and federal initiatives, ensuring their needs are met and recognized.

We recorded this episode on February 6th, and with Valentine’s day coming up, we know that can be a touch day for those who have lost a spouse or romantic partner. Carolyn talks to Alix about how she has turned Valentine’s Day into a meaningful day of giving back, showing how love can heal even the deepest wounds. She encourages widows to embrace the future and look beyond what they thought was possible for their lives. We know our listeners will be inspired by this powerful conversation about the journey of healing and personal transformation after loss.

Tune in to hear about Carolyn’s vision for the Modern Widows Club, the importance of self-love, and the transformative power of focusing on the future. You’ll take away fresh insights, hope, and actionable advice for healing.

Learn more about the Modern Widow’s Club here: https://modernwidowsclub.org

Follow The Modern Widow’s Club on Instagram @modernwidowsclub

Follow WIDOW LIFE on Substack

Follow Wake on Instagram: @thewakewellness

Follow Alix Long on Instagram: @alixlongwinded

Download the WAKE app on the Apple App Store or Google Play Store.
