<p>State of Design in 2024</p> <p>I reflect on the evolution of design from 2020 to 2023, noting a significant increase in design's importance within businesses during the COVID years.</p> <p>Design gained recognition as a valuable function in business, leading to the establishment of design operations to improve collaboration between design, business, and engineering.</p> <p><br /></p> <p>Challenges Faced by Designers</p> <p>I observe a downturn in the design industry, likening it to a recession, with many designers feeling the impact more acutely.</p> <p>There is skepticism about claims of thriving businesses in the current market, suggesting that many are struggling.</p> <p><br /></p> <p>The Role of AI in Design</p> <p>I discuss the misconception that design has been fully embraced by businesses, highlighting that investments were made in areas of design that could be optimized or automated.</p> <p>AI is seen as a disruptive force, taking over certain aspects of design work, particularly for lower-tier clients who may be satisfied with basic outputs.</p> <p><br /></p> <p>Opportunities for Designers</p> <p>I encourage designers to view AI as an opportunity to focus on higher-quality, creative work that machines cannot replicate.</p> <p>Designers should concentrate on the strategic, product, and problem-solving aspects of design that require human insight and creativity.</p>
