by James Frederick
Welcome to YARNS: Conversations With Cruisers. My name is James Frederick and I am currently solo-circumnavigating the world onboard my vintage sloop. I departed Los Angeles in 2021 and have sailed close to 9000 nm through the Hawaiian Islands, French Polynesia, American Samoa, Fiji and New Zealand. I realized I wanted to document other cruisers stories whom I met in far flung anchorages and busy ports. I set up my GoPro camera, hit record and we sit and have a conversation about their lives as cruising sailors. This series is available as both the native video format on my YouTube channel as well as an audio podcast. I don't plan these interviews, they happen when I meet interesting people. I spent 9 months collecting interviews before releasing the first episode. For the most part these are sailors who do not share their lives online in the same way that I do, which is precisely why I wanted to document some of their stories. Most of these sailors think of themselves as "Ordinary" but their lives are extraordinary, as you will soon learn. I hope you enjoy listening to this series as much as I enjoy making it.

If you know anything about sailing, Lin needs no introduction. Her books have inspired millions of people to get out and see the world onboard small boats. She was one of the main reasons I thought this sailing dream, on a small boat with a limited budget. I had only just met David on the day of this interview but had done a bit a research on him ahead of time and read about his 11 year circumnavigation that was a combination of solo and short handed sailing taking him to unique places in the world, off the normal circumnavigation routes.

Lin Pardey Links:

https://pardeytime.blogspot.com

https://www.facebook.com/pardeylin/

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lin_and_Larry_Pardey

Lin Pardey Books:

https://pardeytime.blogspot.com/p/books-dvds.html

David Haigh Links:

http://djhaigh.blogspot.com

https://www.cruisingworld.com/story/people/casting-off-concerns/

------------------------------

About the Host:
James Frederick aka Sailor James is a solo circumnavigator slowly sailing around the world onboard his 1965 Alberg 30 Sloop SV Triteia. With the arrival of their third child they upgraded to a steel 33ft boat, Driver, and headed for the arctic where whey over wintered in the ice year after year living in Newfoundland, Iceland, and the Lofoten Islands of Norway. This interview was a special treat because it was the first time I have interviewed two generations of sailors in the same family.

Their daughter Holly Martin was on the podcast back in June of 2023 : https://youtu.be/gTMg8n-s0_U

Thanks again to the Martin Family for having me over to your beautiful home for dinner and to spin some yarns and thanks to Holly for making it happen.

Dave & Jaja Bio: https://setsail.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/03/itl_bio.pdf

Into the Light: A Family’s Epic Journey – Book : https://www.amazon.com/Into-Light-Familys-Epic-Journey/dp/1930086040

Documentary: Ice Blink : https://thesailingchannel.tv/product/ice-blink-family-sailing-adventure

Holly Martin’s Youtube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/@WindHippieSailing

------------------------------

About the Host:
James Frederick aka Sailor James is a solo circumnavigator slowly sailing around the world onboard his 1965 Alberg 30 Sloop SV Triteia.
