<p>현대의 영어는 라틴어, 프렌치어 그리고 영어의 직접 조상어인 여러 저매닉언어등의 영향을 골고루 받은 언어입니다. 따라서 이러한 언어들에서의 소리변화가 영어의 소리, 즉 발음의 변화에도 상당한 영향을 미쳤죠. <br/><br/>특히 프렌치는 영어의 어휘는 물론 발음에 있어 가장 큰 영향을끼친 언어라 할 수 있습니다. 라틴어가 프렌치로 변모하는 과정에서 일어난 센소리에서 부드러운 소리로의 변화는 프렌치 발음의 가장 큰 특징으로 자리잡게 되고 이러한 부드러운 발음이 영어로 들어오며 이는 발음의 관점에서 볼때 영어를 여타 다른 저매닉 계열의 언어들과 뚜렷히 구분지어주는 특징이 됩니다. <br/><br/>오늘은 지난 시간에 이어 라틴어의 어떤 소리가 프렌치의 부드러운 소리로 변하였는지 알아보도록 하죠. </p>

<p>이번 이야기에서 우리는 올드 프렌치, 즉 현대 프랑스어의 전신인 old french의 초기 발전과정에 대해 알아보겠는데요. 이 old french는 스칸디나비아 바이킹의 언어old norse, 그리고 앵글로 색슨족들의 old english와 더불어 중세시대의 영어, middle english를 탄생시키는 세개의 언어중 하나입니다. <br/><br/>그리고 이 old french는 영어가 글로 표현 할 수 있는 언어로 형성되는 과정 전반에 걸쳐 old norse나 old English와 비교해 볼 때 더 큰 영향을 끼칩니다. 그러니까 1066년 프렌치 노르만의 침입후 상당기간 영국섬, 지배층의 공식언어였던 프렌치는 그 당시 영어의 어휘, 문법, 발음, 스펠링등에 막대한 영향을 끼쳤고 이것이 현대영어로 고스란히 전해지고 있는 것이죠. </p><p> </p>

<p>올드 잉글리쉬는 700년대를 지나며 스칸디나비아 반도의 바이킹족들의 침입으로 인해 그들의 언어였던 old norse의 영향을 받게 됩니다. 그리고 1066년 노르만 프렌치의 영국섬 침략으로 인해 french의 영향이 더해지며 올드잉글리쉬에서 미들잉글리쉬로 변모하게 되죠. 그리고 바로 이 미들잉글리쉬가 우리가 현재 사용하는 영어의 진정한 전신이라고 할수 있겠습니다. 그 말인즉 old norse와 french 가 끼친 영향으로 인한 올드잉글리쉬의 변화가 너무나도 컸기 때문인데요. 이러한 이유로 중세의 영어, 미들잉글리쉬가 현대의 영어와 비교해 볼때 크게 동떨어짐 없이 느껴지는 것에 반해 올드 잉글리쉬는 현대의 영어와는 전혀 다른 언어처럼 느껴지는 것입니다. <br/><br/>하지만 올드잉글리쉬의 흔적은 현대영어의 단어들에서 얼마든지 찾아볼 수 있죠. 또한 문학작품의 소재와 이와 관련된 단어들에서 많이 사용되어집니다. 현대 문학의 장르인 판타지 소설들, 톨킨의 반지의 제왕부터 시작된 많은 판타지 소설들의 소재와 단어선택은 모두 이러한 올드잉글리쉬에 그 뿌리를 두고 있습니다. 이는 또한 당시 앵글로 색슨족들의 풍습과 믿음을 반영한 것이기도 한데요. 당시의 앵글로 색슨족들은 몬스터, 그리고 mythological creatures 신화, 전설로 전해지는 인간이 아닌 존재들을 믿고 숭배했기 때문입니다. 그리고 주술sorcery, 마술witchcraft 의 존재와 영향력을 신성시 했죠. 이는 올드잉글리쉬 문학의 최고봉이라 여겨지는 epic poem, beowulf에도 잘 나타나는데요. 오늘 이야기에서는 이러한 앵글로 색슨족들의 미신숭배와 관련, 현대영어로 전해지는 단어들에 대해 알아보겠습니다. </p>
