むかしむかし、あるところに、ひとりの商人がいました。この人は、たいへんなお金持で、町の大通りをすっかりと、そのうえ小さな横町よこちょうまでも、銀貨でぎっしりと、しきつめることができるくらい、お金を持っていました。けれども、そんなことはしませんでした。もっとそれとはちがった、お金の使い方を知っていたのです。つまり、一シリング出せば、一ターレルもどってくる、というようなやり方です。この人は、そういうりこうな商人でした。――そのうちに、この人は死にました。

いまからずっとずっとむかしのこと、ひとりの皇帝がいました。皇帝は、あたらしい、きれいな着物がなによりも好きでした。持っているお金をのこらず着物に使って、いつもいつも、きれいに着かざっていました。皇帝は、自分のあたらしい着物を人に見せたいと思うときのほかは、兵隊のことも、芝居しばいのことも、森へ遠乗りすることも、なにからなにまで、きれいさっぱり忘れているのでした。
