<p>推荐塞巴尔德是困难的，因为他完全颠覆了我对小说的想象，或者说这是我第一次真正意义上阅读后现代小说。塞巴尔德的写作实践深刻回应了阿多诺“奥斯维辛之后写诗是野蛮的”这一命题。他意识到，直接虚构化处理大屠杀可能陷入两种危险：或是沦为对暴力的消费，或是因无法触及本质而成为‘失语’的沉默。</p><p>塞巴尔德将他的作品定义为“纪实小说”，并且将黑白照片引入小说，冷峻而准确的语言使人感觉你阅读的不是一本小说，而是一篇新闻纪实。在接受詹姆斯·伍德的采访时，塞巴尔德说，他使用的照片90%都是真实的，只有10%是借用其他来源的，这更模糊了虚构与真实的距离。</p><p>塞巴尔德说，‘我认为小说写作中不承认叙述者本身的不确定性，是一种让我觉得非常难以接受的伪装。任何一种类型的写作，如果叙述者在文本中把自己设定为主持人、导演、法官和执行人，我都觉得是不可忍受的。’在《移民》中，叙述中大量的留白，给人物和情节提供了‘不确定性’，这正是塞巴尔德的写作特色，也是使人反复阅读他的理由。</p><p>塞巴尔德生于1945年的德国，是犹太移民之后，在本书中他所描述的四个人，不是奥斯维辛和大屠杀的亲历者，是逃离了迫害的直接影响的人，他们被普里莫·莱维称为“被淹没的”，而不是“被拯救的”。</p>
