In this must-listen archived episode Susan Guthrie, Esq. is joined by Professor Stephanie Tang to unpack one of the most talked-about, and misunderstood, topics in family court: the “best interests of the child” standard. Listeners often ask what this phrase actually means when it comes to custody decisions, and as Susan and Professor Tang explore, it’s far more nuanced than most realize. From the wide-ranging factors judges consider to the pivotal role of judicial discretion, Professor Tang explains why this seemingly simple concept is actually one of the most complex aspects of family law. Whether you're a parent navigating custody, a legal professional, or just curious about how the courts operate, this episode offers a thoughtful, eye-opening perspective you won't want to miss. What You’ll Discover in This Episode: Where the “best interests of the child” standard originated Family court considerations of factors related to custody hearings What judges look at when it comes to a child’s professed wishes Stephanie answers, “Can a parent request a change to custodial orders over time if they don’t agree with the best interests of children's determination?” Does the bearing of what a parent wants come into play? Anger is a natural part of divorce, but what if it’s not something to suppress or fear, but a tool for healing? This week, Susan Guthrie welcomes psychotherapist, speaker, and author Bronwyn Schweigerdt, host of Angry at the Right Things to speak about why anger is actually a good thing. In fact, Bronwyn believes anger isn’t a problem to fix but a guide leading us toward clarity, boundaries, and emotional freedom. In this episode, Bronwyn helps us reframe our relationship with anger and how suppressing it can fuel anxiety, depression, and even physical illness. She also shares practical techniques, like the ‘fantasy letter’ exercise, to process anger in a healthy way. If you’ve ever struggled with anger, your own or an ex’s, we hope this conversation will help you rethink anger and maybe even embrace it as a force for good. Anger can be a tool for healing and self-trust. What You’ll Discover in This Episode: Why anger is a warning light, not a flaw—and how to listen to it. The hidden impact of suppressed anger on your body. How building a healthy relationship with anger can transform your emotional well-being. Boundaries, assertive communication, and accountability can help you move through anger with confidence.
